A new multi-million car park is set to open in Liverpool city centre by the end of the year after the project was given the green light.

Liverpool City Council’s planning committee has approved the construction of a 333 space, five-floor development to replace the existing street level car park on Victoria Street.

The £6.5 million scheme, which will include space for shops, cafes, restaurants and a rooftop terrace, is expected to enter development next month with a view to opening by the end of November.

The council is funding the project and has vowed to plant 90 new trees around the Victoria Street area to replace the 38 which will be lost when the car park is built.

Councillor Malcolm Kennedy, cabinet member for regeneration, says: “Victoria Street is a vital artery in Liverpool’s retail core and a high quality car park will provide a huge boost for surrounding businesses such as the Metquarter.

‘’The scale of the investment and creation of a new leisure attraction will also help accelerate the regeneration that is beginning to take place there.

‘’The current car park is not fit for purpose – offering no bays for blue badge holders, cyclist or motor cyclists. Many of the bays have also been distorted by the root system of the current trees and I’m delighted this car park will pave the way for a much more extensive and much needed planting scheme in this part of the city centre.’’

Other projects granted planning permission at the 10 January council meeting include the expansion of the Hope Street Hotel and 14 new flats for County Road in Walton.

Meanwhile, a decision about proposals for new apartment development at the former Childwall home of screenwriter Carla Lane was deferred for a site visit.
