Plans to create more than 120 extra car parking spaces near to Ely railway station have moved a step closer.

It was in June that East Cambs District Council bosses announced they had purchased a piece of land close to the station with the aim of providing additional car parking spaces for commuters.

The land is close to the Tesco ‘Click and Collect’ depot at The Dock, in Angel Drove.

The council has now applied – to itself – for planning permission to change the use of the land to a public car park, complete with a footpath linking the new car park to the existing car parking facilities in Angel Drove.

It is expected that the cost of parking at the new site will be the same as the prices at the Angel Drove car park.

In a statement to planners, the council’s agents said: “The proposed works include the construction of a car park to provide 128 spaces (including eight disabled spaces) on an unused patch of scrubland, whilst also providing a new footpath link between the two.

“The Dock is located off Angel Drove and currently serves the Tesco supermarket together with other commercial units.

“Due to its proximity to the railway station, it is expected that the car park use will be for commuters/railway users thus alleviating demand on other car parks currently used by railway users.

“The new link footpath will also offer a safe passage for those using the existing Angel Drove car park to the railway station.”

The agents say the car park will be fitted with “adequate lighting and CCTV” – and traffic calming measures in a bid to prevent anti-social behaviour.

Their report said: “The car park has been designed to incorporate traffic calming measures to mitigate some of the anti-social issues that have been apparent elsewhere.

“It will also include adequate lighting and CCTV provisions in order to provide a safe and usable car park.

“In addition to the new car park, the proposals also include a new 1.8m wide link to the existing car park in order to provide a safer passage for those using the Angel Drove car park to the railway station.

“Again, as with the new car park, the link will be suitably lit and covered by CCTV.”

The final decision lies with planners at the council.
