Work to convert seven-and-a-half miles of the M1 near Nottingham into a ‘smart’ motorway starts this week – and it won’t be completed until late 2018.
Smart motorways have a range of features including using the hard shoulder as a fourth lane, either permanently or when the road is busy.
The section between J25 near Sandiacre and J23A near East Midlands Airport is being improved in a £120m scheme.
It will mean around 18 months of roadworks for drivers using this busy stretch of the M1. But Highways England says the project will make journeys faster and more reliable by providing an extra lane in each direction.
