£12m highways programme brings key road improvements to Grantham

Significant highway improvement works are due to get underway across several of Grantham’s busiest routes this July, with the aim of improving road surfaces, enhancing traffic signal reliability and reducing the need for future repairs.

Cllr David East, executive member for highways, said: “These works will improve the condition and reliability of key routes in and around Grantham, helping keep people and goods moving safely and efficiently through the town.

“These routes are used every day by people travelling to work, school, appointments, shops and leisure activities, as well as by businesses moving goods around the county. By investing in them now, we’re helping to ensure that journeys through Grantham remain safe, reliable and efficient for years to come.

“The improvements will not only provide smoother roads and more dependable traffic signals, they will also reduce the need for future maintenance interventions, meaning less disruption for road users in the longer term.”

The programme will include the reconstruction of worn sections of carriageway as well as upgrades to traffic signal equipment at the A52/A607 Grantham Gyratory to improve performance and reliability.

Sam Edwards, head of highways and economic infrastructure, said: “As part of the programme, we’ll be reconstructing sections of carriageway that have deteriorated over time, while also refurbishing traffic signal equipment at the A52/A607 Grantham Gyratory to improve overall reliability and performance.

“In total, we’ll be laying nearly 1,500 tonnes of new road-building material across both sites, helping improve these roads for many years to come.

“By carrying out this work now, we can help prevent more disruptive and costly repairs in the future while continuing to invest in roads that are vital for local residents, businesses and journeys across the wider county.”

Local county councillor Richard Davies welcomed the investment, highlighting the importance of addressing deteriorating road conditions.

Cllr Richard Davies, county councillor for Grantham West, said: “These works are much needed and I’m grateful the county council has listened to local concerns and acted. These are some of the busiest junctions in Grantham and the road condition has deteriorated significantly over the last year.

“I appreciate the disruption the works will cause, but the finished result will be worth it. Better roads mean safer journeys and a better experience for everyone who uses these routes every day.”

Alongside the resurfacing programme, engineers will also carry out repairs to ironwork and improve drainage at the A52/A607 Grantham Gyratory. Completing these activities at the same time is expected to reduce overall costs and minimise future disruption.

Work Schedule

The project will be completed in two phases:

Phase 1

• Location: A607 & B1174 junction, including North Street and North Parade near Barrowby Road
• Start date: Monday 13 July
• Duration: Up to one week

Phase 2

• Location: A52 & A607 Grantham Gyratory, including Dysart Road, Sankt Augustin Way, Westgate, Wharf Road, Harlaxton Road, Station Road West and Stanton Street
• Start date: Monday 20 July 2026
• Duration: Up to six weeks

Traffic Management

Different traffic management measures will be introduced during each phase of the scheme.

Phase 1

• Night-time road closures between 7pm and 6am at the A607 & B1174 junction.
• The slip road from North Street to Barrowby Road will remain open throughout the works.

Phase 2

• Weekday daytime lane closures from 8am to 6pm while footway and traffic signal improvements are carried out.
• Weekday overnight road closures from 7pm until 6am during resurfacing operations.

Wherever practical, access for residents and emergency services will continue to be maintained.

Diversion Routes

Diversion routes will be signed during closures.

Phase 1

• North Parade traffic will be diverted via the B1174 Great North Road, A1, A52, B1174 South Parade, A52 London Road and B1174 High Street.
• Hospital traffic will follow a diversion via Barrowby Road, A52 Sankt Augustin Way, Dysart Road, Westgate, Wharf Road, St Catherine’s Road, Sandon Road, Beacon Lane, New Beacon Road, Hill Avenue, Belton Lane, Manthorpe Road and Brook Street.

Phase 2

• North section traffic will be diverted via Dysart Road, Trent Road and the A607 Harlaxton Road.
• Wharf Road traffic will be redirected via the B1174, Brook Street, Brownlow Street, Broad Street, Barrowby Road and Sankt Augustin Way.
• During road marking works on the southern section, drivers will be diverted via the A607 Harlaxton Road, A1, A52, B1174 South Parade, A52 London Road and Wharf Road.

Cllr East added: “We appreciate these works will cause some disruption while they are taking place, particularly during the overnight closures, so we’d like to thank residents and road users in advance for their patience. I want to reassure everyone that our teams will be doing everything possible to complete the programme as safely, quickly and efficiently as they can while minimising disruption wherever possible.”

The improvements form part of a wider £12 million highways investment programme focused on maintaining Lincolnshire’s key transport routes. The initiative is intended to support local communities, businesses and the regional economy by improving road reliability, lowering future maintenance costs and helping keep vital connections open.
