£45m improvement programme continues as more Tameside roads set for upgrades

A major £45 million highways investment programme is continuing across Tameside, with council officials confirming the next roads scheduled to receive maintenance work.

The five-year initiative is focused on improving and preserving roads, footways and other key elements of the borough’s highway network. Much of the funding will be directed towards preventative maintenance projects aimed at addressing issues before more extensive repairs become necessary.

According to Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council, the programme is designed to reduce reliance on emergency repair work, such as pothole fixes, while ensuring public funds are used more effectively.

Tameside’s highway network stretches across approximately 707 kilometres of roads and more than 1,500 kilometres of footways. The borough also maintains nearly 49,000 highway gullies and over 25,600 streetlights, making transport infrastructure one of the council’s most significant assets.

The authority says road conditions have deteriorated in recent years, resulting in a growing need for reactive maintenance. Since 2021, the number of pothole repairs carried out across the borough has increased by more than 15%.

Upcoming Road Works

The next phase of daytime maintenance works is scheduled as follows:

• Anson Road, Denton – 15 June to 23 June
• Fields Farm Road, Hyde – 23 June to 6 July
• Wood Street, Denton (between Edwards Street and the end of Thornleys Road) – 6 July to 14 July

Council leaders believe that investing in preventative maintenance now will help improve road safety, reduce disruption for residents and prolong the lifespan of the highway network.

The authority estimates that the £45 million programme could prevent around £130 million of future repair costs over the next decade by addressing defects before they become more serious and expensive to fix.

Councillor Laura Boyle, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Environmental Services and Neighbourhoods, said: “Our roads, pavements and street lighting are used by residents every day and keeping them safe and reliable is a key priority for the council.

“This investment allows us to move away from short-term fixes and focus on long-term improvements that reduce disruption, make better use of limited resources and protect the network for the future. These works will also benefit local people by supporting jobs and businesses, creating training and apprenticeship opportunities and investing back into our communities.”

Roads Completed So Far

Maintenance works began in April, and several locations have already benefited from improvements, including:

• Mancunian Road, Denton
• Audenshaw Road, Audenshaw
• Taylor Lane, Denton
• Edge Lane, Droylsden
• Mossley Road, Ashton

The council says the programme will continue over the coming years, with further projects planned across the borough as part of its long-term approach to maintaining local infrastructure.
