Around the globe | Massive road sign suddenly falls crushing car on motorway
This is the shocking moment a massive motorway road sign came crashing down on a car.
Somehow the driver walked away from the horrific accident with only minor injuries. Nella Lettieri, 53, was driving along the Tullamarine Freeway in Melbourne, Australia on Tuesday when the road sign suddenly fell, crushing her car.

Aerial photos from the scene show how her car was completely flattened by the force of impact. In disturbing dash cam footage, the five-metre sign lands directly on Nella’s roof. If she was driving any faster the sign may have come crashing through her windshield, almost certainly leaving her with serious injuries. Nella was rushed to hospital where she is in a stable condition.
Police Sergeant Jason Lane said wind was not a factor in the road sign falling down. ‘There were a lot of other cars on the road, she’s the only one that’s been hit by the sign,’ he added. ‘It is unusual,’ he said. ‘I haven’t come across it before.’ Victoria Police and the Major Roads Project Victoria (MRPB), which oversee the upkeep of motorways, are looking into how this happened.
‘Clearly something has gone wrong and we want to find out why that sign has fallen,’ MRPB director Graeme Chambers said. ‘It’s an extremely rare event. I’ve had 30-plus years’ experience in the industry as an engineer and I’m not aware of such an event happening before. ‘We will not stop until we find out the cause.’
