Birchwood Set for Major Streetlight Upgrade as 84 Units Replaced

A major improvement scheme is set to brighten up Birchwood Avenue in Lincoln, with 84 streetlights and columns due for replacement as part of Lincolnshire County Council’s ongoing commitment to safer, more energy-efficient highways.

The works will begin on Monday 8 September and are scheduled to be completed by Monday 20 October, weather permitting. Carried out between 8:30am and 4:30pm, Monday to Friday, the scheme will focus on upgrading outdated lighting infrastructure to modern, efficient alternatives that will provide better illumination and long-term reliability.

Karen Cassar, Assistant Director for Highways at Lincolnshire County Council, welcomed the scheme, saying:

“With nearly 70,000 streetlights across the county, we look after a lot of these units, and it’s very good news that we can get this large lighting scheme delivered.”

The works will take place along Birchwood Avenue, between the junction with Doddington Road and Jacobean Road, with traffic management carefully planned to minimise disruption. Temporary three-way traffic signals will be used in the most critical sections of the route, while the rest of the work will be managed using signs to keep traffic flowing.

Karen Cassar continued:

“The 84 streetlight works will look at replacing lights and columns where needed and refurbishing aspects of the lighting in the area also.

“Our team will do their best to keep footpaths open and will do everything possible to minimise impact to residents and businesses. Once completed, the streetlights in Birchwood Avenue will be very obviously improved and will go on to give many years of service to come.

“I would like to thank everyone affected for their patience and understanding whilst we are delivering the streetlights improvements along Birchwood Avenue.”

This scheme forms part of the county council’s broader strategy to upgrade infrastructure across Lincolnshire, improving safety, energy efficiency, and service longevity.
