BT-HS | High-speed collision highlights constant safety threat to highway workers
Where safety and quality meet. That’s the BT-HS mantra. It isn’t often that a company can showcase a snapshot of its ethos, but the above video does just that.
A high-speed collision between a road user’s vehicle and an IPV at work, the scene documents the quality of product build as the vehicle’s sleeping driver and passenger left this accident with their lives. However, it’s another timely reminder of the danger our highway workers face on a daily and nightly basis.
We spoke with BT-HS Director Phil Glaiser about the dangers these workers face, and the vehicles designed to protect them on the back of this stark reminder of vulnerability at work.
“It’s harrowing when we see a collision like this.” Said Phil. “It makes things very real.”
“When we have a vehicle returned to us for repair it can be quite shocking to see the extent of the damage but seeing the live footage itself is something else. All BT-HS IPV’s are fitted with 6 CCTV recording cameras which enables multi-angled capture of any collisions and near misses.
“In this case, the workers on this particular vehicle are lucky to be alive having not been in the direct path of the vehicle as it veers into the IPV.”
BT-HS: IPV Safety
By its very nature, the IPV is a vehicle designed for protection, and the provision of safety for the workforce at their most exposed during the installation and de-installation of works.
BT-HS, a FORS Silver Hire accredited company are suppliers and installers of the Traffix Devices Inc. Scorpion crash cushion.
IPV quality is an ongoing mission for BT-HS, with continuous improvement always on the agenda. In 2020, the company took the step of illuminating it’s IPV sign storage, as well as dual illuminating cone wells – two additions born out of listening to customers regarding further improvements.
In 2021, improved scene lighting and an improved Canbus control system – including control panel interface – are two further design enhancements that have been incorporated into the BT-HS IPV build.
“We build with the operative and road user in mind.” Continued Phil.
“We want the guys and girls out there operating on the roads to be in the safest vehicle possible. A vehicle built with such a level of quality that gives them no doubts about their welfare.
“When we see occurrences such as this, where a collision occurs as a result of a driver falling asleep, it cements just how imperative it is that we provide vehicles to operatives with the highest levels of safety and quality.”
