Carnell | Shocking! Roadworker lives endangered as 587 vehicles jump red lights in ONE DAY
The Carnell SafetyCam is a well-known safety innovation that has changed the landscape for site safety. With a growing presence on the UK road network, more and more contractors are recognising the importance of site surveillance for the protection of their workforces.
Amberon TM recently requested SafetyCam attend a scheme on the A359 Ruabon, Wales where they were working following complaints from the site team of extremely high numbers of motorists jumping red lights, using their mobile phones and on occasion being verbally abusive. With an average of 5 vehicles reported jumping the red traffic light on each traffic light cycle, this amounted to approximately 587 drivers breaking the law during every 12-hour shift at each of the four temporary traffic signals.
SafetyCam was deployed approximately 60 metres east of the roundabout, using front and rear cameras and ANPR technology to monitor traffic approaching the roundabout. Camera signs were also placed upstream to make sure that the camera system was as conspicuous as possible.
With SafetyCam present, vehicles jumping the red light reduced by a staggering 95% to 26 just vehicles of the 3375 vehicles recorded passing through the signals.
Mark Frost, SafetyCam Manager said “It’s great to see Amberon leading the way in the quest to improve driver behaviour through roadworks, using SafetyCam to protect the site team. This is our first deployment in Wales and we’ve already had some fantastic feedback and evidence that drivers jumping red lights has reduced by over 95% after the first day of deployment.”
The recorded figure of red-light jumpers is from one of the 4 sides entering the roundabout – and one single 12-hour time period – so could be more like 4,000 in 24hrs. That’s an incredibly high number of dangerous drivers and emphasizes the need for SAFETYcam to increase roadworker safety.
Mark continued “Dangerous driving through road works is a massive problem, not just on our strategic roads network but local authority roads too. Our SafetyCam vehicle is a conspicuous visual deterrent to incursions and jumping red lights, while the prosecution ready evidence has led to a number of convictions. We just want to help make sure that all road workers get home safe and well after their shift.”
Craig Haynes, Area Manager North Wales for Amberon said “I must say that this is a pretty impressive piece of kit which has received really positive feedback from our operatives on site. Within an hour of the SafetyCam leaving site, there was a 4 car crash on the approach in which it had been situated, which just goes to show that it improves driver behavior through road works.”
Evidence of the 26 vehicles driving through red lights has been passed on to North Wales Police to review and potentially proceed to prosecution.
