Community invited to help design changes for key Cambridgeshire road

Residents in Cambridge are being encouraged to take part in a new initiative aimed at shaping the future appearance and functionality of Mill Road.

Cambridgeshire County Council has appointed 5th Studio to engage with the community through a series of events and consultations to gather views on potential enhancements to the busy city route.

Among the ideas being considered are additional seating areas, improved pedestrian crossings, changes to parking arrangements, new trees and planting schemes, upgraded lighting and better facilities for businesses receiving deliveries.

Alex Beckett, Liberal Democrat chair of the council’s highways and transport committee, said: “If there is an appetite for change, we want to know how much and what kind.

“Mill Road is loved by all of us and, if we come together now, we have a real chance to create something amazing for the whole community.”

A programme of public drop-in sessions is scheduled for late June and July, giving residents the opportunity to share their opinions and discuss possible improvements both at local venues and directly on Mill Road.

The council has already identified funding for several early-stage projects, including £11,000 for additional planters and investment towards partial resurfacing works along the road.

Officials say the available funding could support smaller, short-term improvements arising from the consultation process, while larger projects would require further public engagement and additional funding approvals.

• 30 June, 12:00pm–3:00pm, and 16 July, 4:30pm–7:30pm – St Philip’s Church
• 4 July, 10:30am–5:00pm – The Old School Hall (St Barnabas Centre)
• 22 July, 4:30pm–7:30pm – Mill Road Community Centre

In addition to the public events, 5th Studio will organise workshops with local businesses, community organisations and other stakeholders, as well as guided walks along different sections of the road to explore opportunities for future improvements.
