Costain wins £150M M6 smart motorway contract
Costain has been awarded a £150M Highways England contract to design and build the smart motorway scheme on the M6 between junctions 21a and 26.
Under the contract Costain will carry out the works on the 16km long section between Orrell near Wigan and Croft near Warrington, to increase capacity and improve journey reliability.
The scheme will involve the installation of road-side technology and new infrastructure focused on improving the driver experience. This will include variable mandatory speed limits, driver information, including lane availability, provided through a mixture of gantries and cantilever signs and refuge areas where drivers can stop in an emergency.
Costain chief executive Andrew Wyllie said: “This contract builds on our strong track record, working with Highways England, to apply technology-based solutions to increase the capacity and improve the reliability of the UK’s road infrastructure.”
The contract was awarded under the collaborative delivery framework and is expected to be completed by Spring 2021.
