Crown Plus | Providing 74% emission savings through innovative re-engineering
Scheme specific Carbon Assessments for filter drain refurbishment via conventional methods show 74% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
In early 2022 Crown Plus commissioned an independent carbon assessment for the business activities of Crown Plus, as well as a carbon emission comparison between the conventional method of Filter Drain Refurbishment and the new Crown Plus in-situ recycling method.
The resulting report made for impressive findings however Crown Plus decided to go a step further by commissioning a scheme specific assessment to meticulously evidence and quantify the reduction of carbon emissions achievable by employing the Crown Plus in-situ Filter Drain Recycling method.
A scheme being undertaken on the A12 for client Eurovia was selected, this scheme was undertaken over eight weeks starting in early June 2022. During this time daily construction activities were carried out over a duration of between 5 and 8 hours using the Crown Plus Filter Drain Recycling (FDR) method.
Crown Plus then provided an independent engineering and carbon consulting company with a comprehensive dataset detailing quantity of materials, mileages and durations of vehicle and machinery operation. Calculations were supplied for the exact same scheme using the conventional “dig out and replace” method to allow for a thorough and systematic evaluation.
The report substantiated the environmental credential of the in-situ method offered by Crown Plus. The analysis concluded that total carbon emissions from the A12 FDR scheme were 161 tCO₂e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions). In comparison, if the scheme had been carried out using the conventional “dig out and replace” method, the greenhouse gasses would have been 626 tCO₂e. This means by operating the Crown Plus FDR method, a significant saving of 465 tCO₂e was achieved. A 74.3% reduction.
So, what does a 74.3% reduction look like?
The total saved emissions of 465 tCO₂e are equivalent to:
- Emissions from driving 1,154,226 miles using an average fuel car; equal to driving the circumference of world over 46 times, or
- Emissions from burning 223 tonnes of charcoal, or
- Sequestration from 7,689 trees grown for 10 years.
“When Paul and I set up Crown Plus we set out with the goal to provide better solutions to the highways industry through R&D and innovation” says Gary Price, Construction Director and Co-founder of Crown Plus. “This report fuels our vision to further reduce the environmental impact for our organisation and that of our clients, it not only provides substantiated and independently verified comparisons on the possible reductions using the FDR method but focuses our attention to further identify solutions for a more environmentally sustainable way of working and improving highways.”
