Delta Bloc | M1 J16-19 All Lane Running Scheme

Delta Bloc UK have recently completed concrete barrier works on the M1 between Junctions 16 and 19, as part of the Costain Galliford Try JV contract to convert this section of the motorway to ‘all lane running’.
DELTA BLOC precast concrete barriers have been installed in the verges of the motorway to protect bridge piers and other assets from vehicular impact.
Star of the show is the DELTA BLOC DB 80AS-E H2/W1/ISL B. With a vehicle intrusion rating of only VI1, this allows the positioning of the slim single sided pre-cast units close to the bridge piers without compromising the safety of the road user and the protection of the vulnerable structure. When used in conjunction with DELTA BLOC precast transitions, to steel fencing or structures, you have the total high containment verge protection package.
Carrying out major works on the UK’s biggest motorways is nothing new to DELTA BLOC, as this contract follows the recent installation of precast concrete barrier in the central reserve of the M1 between junctions 15 & 16.
Delta Bloc UK MD Tony Walker told us:
“The use of our precast barriers in the central reserve between Junctions 15 & 16 of the M1 showcased our product and demonstrated to our client all of the potential advantages that could be delivered in the verge works.
“The ability to work on multiple structures, at different locations allows the client to work more flexibly which is obviously of huge benefit to them.”
Quick and easy relocation of plant and equipment has meant DELTA BLOC has completed installations often at a rate of more than 2 structures per night shift. Traditional slip-form construction techniques would make this more difficult and therefore reduce output and increase programme time.
The use of DELTA BLOC precast systems to protect multiple structures in the verge demonstrates the flexibility of the system in meeting complex and changing construction programmes. The verge works are notoriously tight for space behind the temporary VRS and as a result, being able to work quickly in an area and then vacate to another structure has helped significantly to allow follow-on works to proceed swiftly.
Tony concluded:
“Having successfully supplied the pre-cast concrete barrier solution on the M1 between Junction 15 & 16 it was fantastic to carry on the momentum and secure the verge works- albeit with a different client.
“We were able to show the client the benefits delivered in the central reserve and how that could translate to the verges. The flexible working achieved through the use of pre-cast was a key driver for them to use our products on this scheme.”
