DELTA BLOC | M6 J19-16 SMP
In August 2016, DELTA BLOC UK began work on the M6 Junction 19-16 £274 million Smart Motorway Project. They were appointed to replace the existing steel barriers in the central reserve with 20 miles of DELTA BLOC precast concrete barrier system.
Placing a rigid concrete barrier in the central reserve, instead of the steel, is designed to reduce the risk of crossover incidents and reduce maintenance long term, cutting the need for lane closures.
DELTA BLOC deployed their double sided DELTA BLOC DB 80E H2/W1/ISL B barrier units for the majority of the scheme installed in combination with other compatible DELTA BLOC systems to complete the structure tie ins and emergency crossing points required on the scheme.
This scheme follows the successful completion of the central reservation on the M1 between junctions 15 and 16, where the scheme, which included the Delta Bloc product range, was nominated for a Highways England Recognition award.

DELTA BLOC products are manufactured off site and the modular construction process means a quick and efficient on-site operation, where the quality of the product can be guaranteed first time. These are both key factors which could help achieve Highways England’s goal of significantly better results through reduced delivery and installation times.
There are no issues to overcome with supply of ready mixed concrete and inclement weather, both of which can be very problematic when carrying out slipform operations and it is for these reasons that many of the HE’s delivery partners are now looking more favourably at DELTA BLOC precast barrier solutions for the central reserve.
For the M6 J19-16 team to meet the construction programme, the certainty of delivery of quality products all year round was a key driver for the client in making DELTA BLOC their choice for the job.
The use of Delta Bloc products on a major project of c30km in length, shows that clients now have the confidence not only in the product but also in the company to deliver schemes of this magnitude. CE marked products produced in a factory environment are delivered and installed on site by competent and trained installers, providing maximum protection for road users, while minimising disruption.
Additionally, it also shows that DELTA BLOC can provide the full range of services from technical assistance up-front through to completion on site. The successful completion of this scheme so far has generated much interest in the industry and as a result, a busy 2018 is being forecasted.
Tony Walker, MD of Delta Bloc UK told us:
“Securing the order for the central reserve barrier was a key milestone for us because it demonstrates very clearly that the marketplace now sees precast concrete is a very credible alternative to more commonly used slipformed barrier systems.
“Precast concrete vehicle restraint systems can provide measurable benefits to all stakeholders and we hope that the project will provide further evidence to Highways England and their delivery partners that precast solutions can be advantageous when delivering projects of this scale. “
Installation on the M6 is due for completion in September 2017. Visit DELTA BLOC to see the full product range.
