Delta Bloc | Materials Innovation Award winner at Highways UK 2018
Delta Bloc UK are delighted to showcase their victory in the highly competitive Materials Innovation Awards at Highways UK 2018.
The event held at the NEC Birmingham on November 7th and 8th is rapidly becoming the UK’s leading highways exhibition and has grown hugely across its 4-year existence.
Delta Bloc were invited to deliver their ‘Dragons den’ style pitch to the award judges on day 1 of the show. When the winners were announced on day 2: success!
Delta Bloc took home the award for best infrastructure and structures around the pavement in the materials innovation awards.
So, what was the Delta Bloc entry? A 2 in 1 temporary/permanent barrier solution that provides major cost reducing opportunities.
Tony Walker, delta Bloc MD explains:
“Through our experience of the temporary and permanent safety barrier market in UK we have developed a solution that solves a number of site issues with one barrier. The use of our DELTA BLOC DB 80E precast concrete barrier system provides a ‘2 in 1’ temporary/permanent solution for the client.
“With the ‘2 in 1’ approach, first the barrier is used as a temporary system to protect workers in the central reserve with performance characteristics comparable to other systems. Later the barrier is then shifted to its permanent location providing the high level of containment required in the central reserve.”
This shifting operation that take places from the temporary to permanent position firstly demonstrates the speed and flexibility of the precast barrier installation process.
Secondly, under normal circumstances the temporary barrier would be charged to a client at the relevant rental rate. However, as the permanent barrier is being used as a temporary option first, it is paid for upon initial installation, and then remains on site free of charge. This significantly contributes to scheme savings.
We asked Tony for his thoughts on the award victory:
“As you’d expect, we’re very pleased that recognition of our commitment to innovation has been acknowledged with an award win in what was a very competitive category. All our team can be proud of their efforts.
“We’ve had some very deep and productive conversations at Highways UK about this system, so we’re excited about the practical applications to come.”
