Delta Bloc UK has successfully installed approximately 1km of precast concrete road safety barrier system across the Huntworth Viaduct on the M5 between junction 23 and junction 24.
The £5.4 million Highways Agency contract required the replacement of the expansion joints, re-waterproofing the surface of the viaduct, and resurfacing of the southbound carriageway. Part of the works also involved the upgrade of the existing central reserve road safety barrier.
Working with Skanska and CD Fencing , the Delta Bloc UK contract involved the replacement of the existing steel barrier in the central reserve with DELTA BLOC DB 80E precast rigid concrete road safety barrier.
A precast barrier solution was preferred by Skanska to overcome the design and construction difficulties often associated with bridges when cast in-situ barrier solutions are used.
DELTA BLOC DB 80E is an EN 1317-2 crash tested H2 containment level precast concrete system that meets all the Highways Agency requirements for rigid concrete barrier in the central reserve of motorways.
The DELTA BLOC DB 80E system was used in combination with DELTA BLOC expansion joints at the North and South abutments to manage the movement characteristics of the viaduct. Connections to existing steel fences on the approach and departure of the structure were completed using DELTA BLOC precast concrete transition units that allow the simple anchoring of the steel fence to the rigid concrete barrier through cast in sockets.
The high installation outputs that are possible with precast systems enabled the barrier works to be completed quickly and effectively.
