Dragon Asphalt | Quality, Knowledge and a proven track record comes roaring out of South Wales
Dragon Asphalt was formed by asphalt industry veteran, Mike Cowley, and his finance partners in Spring 2018 and is an independent manufacturer of a full range of asphalt materials.
Dragon Asphalt has installed a Parker 2000 asphalt plant with four hot mixed material storage bins capable of holding 300 tonnes of product. The plant has planning permission to operate 24/7 and, at present, is open to customers 7 days each week. The aggregate storage bays can hold the full range of aggregates and hence the plant can offer Asphaltic Concretes, Hot Rolled Asphalts and SMAs as our customers require.
Dragon Asphalt is located within Alexandra Docks in Newport, South Wales. The dockside location ensures easy access to both incoming raw materials and customers alike. Close proximity to M4 major junctions 24 East and 28 West, and the metropolitan areas of Newport and Cardiff (12 miles) reduce travelling times to key markets for highway contractors and other construction services.
The removal of the Severn Bridge tolls and the anticipated new M4 spur road will enhance Dragon’s convenience.
Dragon’s primary market is that of customers who collect small loads for minor works. For the obvious reasons of scale and material variety, it is not always possible for large asphalt plants to serve such customers in a timely manner. Dragon recognises that waiting for asphalt is an unnecessary cost to small contractors and has a declared aim of loading trucks within 15 minutes of the vehicles being ‘weighed in’ at the plant. A range of ancillary products such as pre-coated chippings, hand tools, etc are available from stock at the depot.
As above, Dragon will meet the demand of small load collecting customers operating in the Newport Cardiff conurbations and to whom time is money. Deliveries are also available upon request. Local Authorities, Utility Contractors, and local builders will be able to plan their working day with certainty that asphalt will be available as they expect.
Mike Cowley, as a graduate of Economics from Bristol University and over 35 years of experience in the quarrying and asphalt industry, knows the difference between theory and practice in business. He started as a Management Trainee with Tarmac and has held senior roles within the quarrying, asphalt, and contracting divisions of Tarmac, Hanson and Aggregate Industries. Most recently Mike was Managing Director of United Asphalt in SE England.
Business Manager Chris Barron has 13 years’ experience in the collect asphalt industry. He recently graduated from Loughborough school of business and economics and has practical experience of managing a collect asphalt business both operationally and commercially.
Dragon MD Michael Cowley told us:
“At Dragon we know that many of our customers will, like us, be small company owners and operators and we appreciate fully that quality of service goes beyond the reasonable expectation of high quality goods and prompt dispatches….so we will not only exceed those expectations but will also introduce simple and effective administration processes that will enable all customers to focus on growing their businesses.
“Time consuming tasks such material quotations, order placement, delivery tickets, account payment, invoicing etc will be available electronically via mobile devices and online through our secure customer portal.
“We see exciting prospects for South Wales with investment in infrastructure, education, housing etc and can feel the confidence of an area that is looking forward. Dragon shares that belief and has invested over £2m pounds in the future of both South Wales and itself.”
