Enhancing Road Network Efficiency and Safety: A Comprehensive Gully Cleaning Contract in Birmingham

In an effort to ensure the safety and efficiency of the road network in Birmingham, a comprehensive gully cleaning contract has been put into effect. This contract aims to address the maintenance needs of the extensive network of gullies in the area. Through regular cleaning and inspection, the contract seeks to enhance the overall functionality of the network and provide a more pleasant experience for residents and road users.
In this article, we delve into the scope of the contract, the cleaning process, environmental considerations, worker safety measures, technological advancements, and the anticipated benefits.
The contract, which was appointed to Kier Highways, includes the city’s traffic operations, planned and reactive maintenance, inspections and winter servicing. The contract covers more than 2,500km of road and 5,000km of footways, as well as 846 structures, three tunnels, 94,000 street lighting columns, 76,000 highway trees and the city’s traffic control system.
Ian Davies, Service Delivery Manager for Kier, told us: “Since 2020, we have carried out Birmingham’s gully maintenance in partnership with R&C Williams. This is a significant undertaking due to the size of the network. Through close collaboration, our approach focuses on minimising disruption, reducing our environmental impact, and embracing technology – creating a positive impact in the communities we work.”
Scope of the Contract:
The contracted company is tasked with cleaning every gully in the Birmingham area or making a diligent attempt to do so. As of the last count, there were approximately 109,669 gullies that require cleaning and maintenance.
The cleaning of each gully is scheduled to occur once every year, following a June-to-June cycle. This recurring maintenance approach ensures that the gullies remain clear of debris and silt, facilitating efficient drainage throughout the road network.
Cleaning Methods and Equipment:
Specialised jet-vac lorries are employed for the purpose of cleaning road gullies. The cleaning process involves manual lifting of gully lids or the use of a hydraulic lifter mounted on the side of the truck in case of lid obstructions. The lorries are equipped with a boom arm and a powerful vacuum system to extract debris and silt from the gully. Water is subsequently added to test the outlet’s functionality, and if needed, a high-pressure hose with a specialized jet is used to clear any blockages. In cases where the outlet cannot be cleared, the information is reported back to the client for further investigation.
Impact on Traffic Flow and Residents:
The cleaning process is designed to minimize disruption to traffic flow. While larger roads typically remain unaffected, smaller, narrower streets may experience temporary blockages to facilitate the gully cleaning. Efforts are made to complete the cleaning swiftly to minimize inconvenience. Once cleaning is finished, the crew moves the lorry to a safe location to allow the resumption of normal traffic flow.
Environmental Considerations:
Stringent environmental considerations are in place during the gully cleaning process. Each gully undergoes a visual inspection to identify signs of contamination, such as oils or other pollutants that could cause environmental harm. If any contamination is detected, work is halted, and the issue is reported for further investigation and remediation.
R&C uses an extrernal ‘Wet Waste Transport Station’ , which is a licensed facility dedicated to the efficient and responsible management of sweeper and gulley waste. This specialised station operates with the goal of minimising the environmental impact associated with such waste while maximising the potential for recycling. By employing an innovative drying process, they have achieved an impressive 90% recycling rate for the waste they handle.
At the core of the station’s operations is a sophisticated drying system that effectively reduces the moisture content of the waste. This process not only facilitates easier handling and transport but also enhances the subsequent recycling capabilities. By significantly reducing the moisture levels, the waste becomes more amenable to various recycling techniques, enabling the extraction of valuable materials and resources.
Once the waste has undergone the drying process, it is ready for recycling. The waste is then transferred to an advanced sorting and separation technologies to extract recyclable materials from the waste stream. Through meticulous sorting and processing, a wide range of materials such as metals, plastics, and organic matter are recovered for recycling purposes. These materials are then directed to appropriate recycling facilities, where they can be transformed into new products or used as feedstock for various industries.
The emphasis on recycling at the ‘Wet Waste Transport Station’ is driven by a commitment to environmental sustainability. By diverting a significant portion of the waste from landfill disposal, they play a vital role in reducing the strain on natural resources and mitigating the ecological impact associated with waste generation. The station’s recycling efforts contribute to the conservation of raw materials, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and the overall promotion of a circular economy.
In addition to their recycling achievements, the ‘Wet Waste Transport Station’ also ensures strict compliance with all relevant environmental regulations and safety protocols. They prioritise proper waste handling, storage, and transportation, adhering to industry best practices and implementing robust quality control measures throughout the entire process. By upholding these standards, they not only safeguard the environment but also guarantee the protection of public health and safety.
The comprehensive gully cleaning contract aims to contribute to the overall maintenance and efficiency of the road network. By ensuring that all gullies are regularly cleaned and functioning optimally, the contract helps prevent flooding and enhances the safety and convenience of residents and road users.
Streamline operations
R&C has embraced technological advancements. The transition from paper to tablet-based recording has expedited reporting, making it easier to raise job cards from reports. Furthermore, the company is exploring new lifting equipment for gully lids, aiming to enhance efficiency and worker safety during the cleaning process.
