Eurovia Contracting | Building Links to New Riverside Housing Development
In line with the Government’s drive to provide new housing across the country, Eurovia Contracting has started the construction of a new spine road to link the existing networks at River Road, Renwick Road and Choats Road in Barking. The new road is expected to speed up the growth of the area by unlocking 13 brownfield sites.
The new road is the first phase in a regeneration project that will create a new community in East London. The site will include 10,800 homes on a former power station site, new schools, nurseries, community centre, pharmacy, retail outlets, multi-faith spaces, leisure facilities and more. It is one of the largest new housing developments in the UK and supports the Government’s affordable housing schemes. It is due to be completed in September 2034.
Eurovia Contracting was awarded the £7m new build contract following ECI (early contractor involvement) discussions with the London Highways Alliance Contract (LOHAC) service provider, Ringway Jacobs, in 2016.
The company began work in June 2016, constructing the 1.9km long and 19m wide pavement, which will incorporate the carriageway, footway and cycleway. The new road, also involves the installation of new drainage systems and other vital public utilities to support the development.
Building the road and the access infrastructure will enable construction traffic to come onto the site. The Eurovia and Ringway Jacobs team are working closely together to ensure the road project is on schedule, keeping the overall programme on track. Work is due to be completed by September.
Working with supply chain partner, CPM, Eurovia has brought innovation to the project with pre-fabricated manholes. Perfect Manholes mitigate safety risks such as working in confined spaces and open excavations. They slot straight in without the need for an operative to enter the open trench. As well as the safety benefits, they are also quicker to install, which is vital on a scheme where timing is crucial.
Neil Huntington, Regional Director of Eurovia Contracting, said: “Eurovia is extremely pleased to have been chosen to be part of the development and creation of a new community in London. We are very proud to be working with our clients and supply chain partners to deliver the first phase of this important housing development scheme. With our asphalt plant on the docks at Dagenham and our long standing history of working in the area, this project has been a great opportunity to showcase our abilities, local knowledge and relationships with local suppliers.”
