Highways UK | Rising to the challenge
Highways UK; the place to visibly demonstrate the sector is rising to the government’s “deliberately ambitious” highways challenge
Highways UK is a major new event at London’s ExCeL bringing together the people responsible for planning, developing, managing and maintaining the UK’s road network.
It takes place at London ExCeL on 25/26 November and combines a high-level conference, together with industry and innovation briefings and a substantial exhibition.
The event’s principal supporters are Highways England and Transport for London, ensuring top-level input with respect to both the strategic network and urban mobility perspectives.
Highways UK’s advisory board is co-chaired by former government minister and London Mayoral candidate Steve Norris and former HA deputy chief executive Derek Turner. The group includes senior and active representation from Highways England, TfL, Transport Focus, Transport Systems Catapult, ITS UK, Rees Jeffreys Road Fund, TRL, CIHT, Civil Engineering Contractors Association, Campaign for Better Transport, RHA, AESIN, AIA, Britpave. Commercial launch partners include Mott MacDonald, Burges Salmon, Kier, Imtec, EC Harris, Thales, bam nuttall, Temple and ACO. Highwaysindustry.com is a media partner.

Both Jim O’Sullivan, the new chief executive of Highways England and Mike Brown, TfL’s newly appointed Commissioner are confirmed speakers and they will be joined by a who’s who of the Highways sector.
But the event is much more than a great conference.
The Government’s Road Investment Strategy sets out plans to spend over £15bn in the six years to 2020/21. It is the first ever long-term plan for developing the nation’s highways network and the Department for Transport has set out what it describes as a “deliberately ambitious” and demanding vision for Highways England to deliver.
But as Jim O’Sullivan suggested in one of his first interviews since taking HE’s helm, to ensure on-going investment at these levels it is imperative that HE and its supply chains can rapidly demonstrate that the sector has the resources, skills, capacity and appetite to rise to the challenges.
Clearly the moment is now and if as an industry we don’t respond, this once in a lifetime opportunity could slip through our fingers.
Highways UK will bring together the existing and new organisations in the highways sector supply chains at this tremendously exciting and challenging time for the industry.
And its innovative format is designed to promote maximum interchange between all elements of the event. For instance the conference hall is set in the centre of the show floor, ensuring delegates see exhibitors when heading to and from their sessions. The conference is modular and delegates only pay to attend the sessions that are of key interest to them. This ensures they aren’t ‘locked’ into the conference hall and miss the opportunity to see exhibitors. And keynotes take place from an open standing stage on the exhibition floor, again encouraging delegates to circulate in the hall
