IAT – IAT Launches New Operational Membership Grade to Strengthen Industry Standards

The Institute of Asphalt Technology (IAT) has announced the introduction of a new membership grade – Operational Member of the IAT (OMIAT) – designed specifically to recognise and support site-based professionals working across the asphalt sector.

The new grade marks an important step forward in broadening access to professional recognition within the industry. While applications can be submitted from now, they will be processed once the membership grade goes live.

Aimed at individuals working in contracting, asphalt production, technical, or design roles, the OMIAT grade has been created to reflect the essential contribution of operational staff to the delivery of the UK’s road infrastructure. To qualify, applicants must be in a site-based asphalt technology role, demonstrate a working knowledge of the discipline, hold at least 12 months of industry experience, and provide a CV to support their application.

Priced at £120 per year, the new membership offers a comprehensive package of professional, technical, and career-focused benefits.

One of the most significant advantages is formal professional recognition.

Members will be entitled to use the post-nominal OMIAT after their name, demonstrating their status within the industry and their commitment to maintaining high standards. As part of the UK’s professional body for asphalt technology, this recognition helps reinforce credibility both on site and across the wider sector.

In addition to recognition, members will gain access to a range of practical tools and resources designed to support day-to-day operations. This includes a Laying Guide available through the IAT App, offering quick reference to best practice on site, as well as technical videos that provide accessible learning and knowledge refreshers.

The OMIAT grade also places a strong emphasis on learning and development. Members will be able to access Continuing Professional Development (CPD) resources to log and track their progress, alongside opportunities to attend Derby Courses, with potential sponsorship available through local IAT branches.

From technical seminars and branch meetings to social events, members will be able to connect with professionals across contracting, production, testing, and design, encouraging knowledge sharing and collaboration across the sector.
