Isla’s Journey – A Community Comes Together

In the vast world of motorways, fierce competition is the norm. But sometimes, a story emerges that binds everyone together. This is the story of Isla Duffy.
The Highways community has come together, setting aside competition, to rally behind one of its youngest members – Isla Duffy. Born with cerebral palsy due to a premature birth and a severe medical condition, Isla’s journey has been a testament to resilience, determination, and an unwavering spirit.
The Early Days
Isla is the granddaughter of Martin Duffy, a popular and respected figure in the Highways Industry. Born at 27 weeks’ gestation, her early days were fraught with challenges. A placental abruption had forced an early birth, which led to a lack of oxygen and resultant brain damage. Over her initial weeks, she fought bravely in the neonatal care units of St Mary’s in Manchester and Stepping Hill in Stockport. After 107 intense days, she was discharged home, marking the beginning of her challenging journey ahead.
2 Years On
Two years later, the bright-eyed Isla faces significant physical challenges. She scores 3 to 4 out of 5 on the Gross Motor Function Classification System. The spastic diplegic cerebral palsy mainly affects her leg functions. She currently can’t sit independently, crawl, or walk. Additionally, communication is a challenge as she is non-verbal and has suspected autism.
However, it’s not just about her physical challenges. Isla’s emotional journey resonates deeply. As her family notes, she’s a very frustrated little girl who just wants to do what other two-year-olds do.
Community Support
Isla’s story touched the hearts of many. The recent coffee reception put on by Kiely Bros saw Simeon, Isla’s Dad, sharing her story. A remarkable £50k has been raised so far, with almost 50% of that from the campaign itself. There’s still an opportunity to further this support, with the sale of 8 cones that can add another £4,000 to this fund.
How You Can Help
Apart from financial donations, sharing and following Isla’s Instagram page raises awareness about cerebral palsy and amplifies Isla’s story.
This collective effort is being managed by a consortium of organisations including Highways News, HighwaysIndustry.Com, Highways Magazine, Traffex, and Highways UK. It’s a testament to the fact that when a community comes together, they can create waves of positive change.
In Isla’s journey, there’s pain and challenges, but more than that, there’s hope, love, and the indomitable spirit of a little girl and the community that stands with her.
