Kier | Driving the industry forward

Kier Highways are currently proving to be exceptional in the highways sector with a whopping 11 award nominations at the CIHT 2018 awards last night (14/6/18).
Kier went on to scoop an astonishing 4 awards, being commended and highly commended for the remaining 7 nominations.
Dave Wright, executive director for Kier Highways won the ‘Inspirational Leadership Award’ at the prestigious event, held at the De Vere Grand, London. He later tweet that he was “Feeling humble and very proud to lead a great team”.
Since taking up a senior leadership role in 2010, Dave has challenged traditional methods of working through extolling the values of true collaboration with clients and suppliers, raising the bar on safety, customer focus and innovation.
Kier have been investing in innovation, developing systems and working practice to improve Road Worker Safety, efficiency and to deliver schemes effectively.
Initially, some believed this shift to and focus on collaboration would potentially expose Kier to uncomfortable levels of openness, and Dave himself faced some scepticism and disregard.
However, his leadership and perseverance paid off, as collaboration is now the norm all across the industry and is often a buzzword and ‘selling point’ from companies when tendering for schemes of work. The times have changed.
With individual success came company success, as Kier also won the CIHT Health & Safety at Work Award in collaboration with Carnell for SAFETYcam, which is the Mobile Road Worker Protection System which protects road workers by using two complementary vehicle detection systems to capture instances of dangerous driving. SAFETYcam was also the overall award winner of the night. Read here about SAFETYcam
Along with Highway Resource Solutions Ltd, Kier won the CIHT / Ringway Innovation Award for the Smart Taper, aimed to monitor the integrity of cone tapers and immediately report strikes directly to TM crews.
They also collected the award for the CIHT / Colas Skills Award for S-Skill for Highways, an amazing award for those who are not in education, employment or training (NEETS’s) or those with special educational needs, with an intention of carrying out basic highways works in the community.
As if that wasn’t enough of a successful evening, Kier were then commended for the Kier Highways Safety Excellence Journey along with 6 other awards on the night.
Working closely with Highways England Kier have developed ground breaking change in the way the industry works. Holding workshops all over the UK, working on collaborative projects and striving to find new products and services to improve the network and its workforce.
Scott Cooper, Kier Highways Managing Director told us:
“I am very proud of the Kier Highways Team and supply chain after an amazing night of success at the Awards.
It is a demonstration of what can be achieved with true collaboration with both our clients and our supply chain.
We set ourselves the challenge a few years ago to drive innovation into all that we do and last night was real evidence of what can be achieved with a great team effort!”
