LMS Highways | 5 Things You Never Knew…

You may know LMS Highways as a premier highways maintenance outfit, but there’s much more to the company than meets the eye.
Here are 5 things you may never have known about one of the UK’s leading national suppliers:
1. The company name ‘LMS’ originally stood for ‘Line Marking Services’ and the company started up in 1984 as a purely local, line marking company under the Line Marking Services banner.
Now with a range of services including ironworks, joint repair and civil solutions, the name LMS Highways continues to pay homage to its origins, but has developed and evolved over the years into a brand that suitably represents its diverse range of services.
“We’re delivering real substantial savings of 10-15% to our customers right now…customers find the prospect of proven savings a very attractive proposition”
Paul Winter, Director, LMS Highways
2. LMS was set on its path of success by the father of current Director Wendy Winter- and that family feel remains throughout the company today. Purchased in 2004 by Wendy and husband Paul Winter, the ambitious couple have driven LMS Highways to national market recognition
LMS place a huge amount of value in their family feel, and recognise the importance of the team they have around them:
“We’re a family here, and what we’ve built has always been about more than just Paul and I. We’ve taken some huge decisions, but without the experience and skills of our key people, we simply wouldn’t have been able to grow in the way, or at the rate we have.”

3. LMS Highways are a multi-site company.
Two years ago, their operation branched out from Devon to Essex with the addition of their Harlow depot. Opened in October 2014, LMS decided to set up a base closer to London to be able to service key contracts on the M25, M11 and other major roads in the South-East of England. Now 2 years have passed and operations in Harlow have gone from strength to strength. Vehicles have increased from 12 to 20, workforce has increased from 20 to 45 and the journey has included the capture of major works for clients including Skanska, Balfour Beatty, Tarmac and Amey.
4. They designed and developed the MMAX Extruder and with it, revolutionised joint repair before winning the Highways Industry Product of the Year award in 2012.
Paul Winter designed and built the MMAX, a revolutionary and sophisticated machine-based joint repair system. Working at speeds of up to 1,500 m/h, the system completely removed the need for operatives in the carriageway, improving safety and allowing mobile TM closures.
The machine was an immediate success with Balfour Beatty, one of the first MMAX customers, being very complimentary. Darren Painter, Senior Route Engineer in the BBMM Area 2 at the time glowingly endorsed the MMAX:
“We saw an increase in productivity of 320% compared to traditional joint repair methods”.
5. Kerb to Kerb Service.
The company offers an unrivalled kerb to kerb service with their broad range of expertise. The company has grown tremendously since 1984, when Line Marking Services started on the journey to become the national player they are today.
LMS has evolved from offering line marking to regional customers to being able to deliver specialist highway repairs including crack and joint repair, expansion joints and ironworks; road marking and specialist surfacing such as imprint and high friction surfacing and civil solutions which includes concrete bay replacements and bridge repairs. Offering these combined services across the UK enables LMS Highways to be uniquely positioned to save their customers time and money. Paul told us: “We’re delivering real substantial savings of 10-15% to our customers on contracts right now by handling repair and lining reinstatement. Customers find the prospect of proven savings plus the additional joined-up accountability a very attractive proposition”.
