M1 in Leicestershire reopens ahead of schedule after maintenance work finishes 12 hours early
The southbound M1 between junctions 23a and 23 in Leicestershire has fully reopened after maintenance work on the West Meadow Viaduct and Diseworth Long Watton bridge finished ahead of schedule.
This stretch of the M1 was scheduled to be closed until 6am on Monday morning but work was completed early with the motorway fully reopening before 6pm on Sunday 17 May.
This essential work was to renew waterproofing on the viaduct and bridge which will protect the life spans of the structures, and involved planing off the existing carriageway surface, removing and replacing the existing waterproofing system and resurfacing the carriageway. This work will also help to prevent water leaking onto the bridge decks creating potholes.
