MAC Surfacing | Never accepting the status quo

It’s not easy to buck trends. To stand out. To not just accept ‘this is how things are done.’
It takes a certain bravery, in addition to some stoic belief to do things your own way. To know there will be questions and challenges along the way, yet still persevere with your vision.
For MAC Surfacing, ‘We’ve always done it this way’ is effectively a prohibited mindset. The company has always done things in its own manner, stepping outside what may widely be perceived as the norm to deliver the best possible service for its customers.
A third-generation family business, current MD Marc Copson exemplifies this attitude that the company has practiced throughout its entire history. With a background in IT, Marc has driven MAC to a more modern offering utilising technology that differentiates MAC from the rest.
Portal
With a six-figure investment into its digital systems, MAC Surfacing’s in-house platform, ‘Portal’, aids in the planning and delivery of all works, utilising the data to deploy its assets accordingly.
“When you don’t provide ‘off the shelf’ solutions, you can’t rely on ‘off the shelf’ systems.” Says MD, Marc.
“We understand the need to introduce new technologies, but with the unique nature of our offering, and our provision of the complete surfacing solution, it just cannot be a one size fits all approach. We had to step away from the status quo.”
“The data we gather via Portal gives us great understanding of our own business which then helps shape how we operate, but in the future, we will also be investing in significant additions for both our own benefit, and that of our customers. We’ll be informing customers as and when resources are deployed, status updates and looking to integrate 2-way communication between MAC HQ and our client for easy dialogue.”
The team
It takes a certain type of person to make the MAC team.
“Our ability to react to emergency surfacing works is far from the norm.” Marc continued.
“It takes a certain mindset and level of collaborative working to deliver such demands on such short notice. For example, we could have a 400t emergency on the M6 and just a couple of hours’ notice to mobilise and deliver. Our team have to be able to keep their cool and see past the problems and it’s often far from a ‘normal’ scenario, so working in typical fashion doesn’t always cut it.
“Our team has extensive site knowledge, and our management all have site backgrounds. This means our team has the ability and knowhow to challenge each other and think outside the box to achieve desired outcomes. We’re often faced with unique challenges, and so ‘we’ve always done it this way’ just doesn’t cut it.”
