MAC Surfacing | The MD: 1 year on – 2019 & what’s in store for 2020?

When Marc Copson stepped up to become MAC Surfacing MD, he followed in his Father’s footsteps. Marc’s father set up the business and guided it through infancy into the national surfacing solution provider it is today.
With family values ingrained in the way the business runs, and Mark Snr now company Chairman, there’s now another member of the Copson family at the helm of day to day business.
Now approaching 12 months as MD, Marc has overseen some big changes throughout 2019 and in that time, has refined the fleet of pavers and planer to optimise utilisation and improve customer service.

One of the biggest changes implemented is in capacity, as the company has increased its scale from 3 surfacing teams to 4 full-time surfacing teams.
At peak periods, up to 8 teams have been operating in collaboration with trusted business partners of MAC Surfacing as demand for their services continues to grow.
Across 2019, Marc has also steered and secured the negotiation of MAC Surfacing’s longer-term presence on major planing contracts. Planing division MAC PLANE will be busy throughout 2020 to say the least.

MAC PLANE continues to grow
Additionally, the in-house workshop and out of hours service have been refined to improve the overall MAC offering.
MAC now has a refined on-call system which guarantees there is cover 52 weeks of the year for both in house operational reasons, as well as a fitter available to contracted customers when needed
Additionally, MAC has invested in maintenance software (R2C) which has allowed their workshop to be more in tune with the company’s maintenance through portable devices.
This has also enabled MAC to roll out an app to all drivers and operators to report defects in real-time, and these go straight to the workshop.
As 2019 draws to a close, the focus is now on 2020. Customer Service, Quality and Safety – as ever – are the focus across the business. It’s a tried and trusted formula.
In January 2020, MAC Surfacing will be having a safety stand-down week to ensure the whole company are given ongoing CPD about the company ethos, values and processes. It’s this investment in their people that keep that family feel, as well as standards exceptionally high.
Marc Copson, MD, told us:
“There has been a lot of refinement this year since taking over as MD. We believe we’ve always had a great offering and a fantastic range of services, so this year saw a lot of focus on fine-tuning those services.
“The growth into 4 teams has been great for the business, that increase in capacity is another string to our bow.
“As we move into 2020, we look forward to further growth, as well as touching base with all of our people in January for the stand-down day.”
