Major road and travel upgrades set to begin across Bath

A series of road repairs and transport improvement projects are due to begin across Bath city centre from the end of May, with works aimed at improving road conditions and enhancing walking, wheeling and cycling routes.

Engineering works on Manvers Street are scheduled to start on 26 May and are expected to continue for around six months. At the same time, improvements to pedestrian, wheeling and cycling facilities on Bridge Street are set to begin, with those works anticipated to last approximately three weeks.

Bath & North East Somerset Council has warned that the projects are likely to lead to some travel disruption and is encouraging residents and visitors to make greater use of the city’s Park & Ride services.

Regular services operate from Newbridge, Odd Down and Lansdown, offering easier access to Bath’s shops, workplaces and visitor attractions during the construction period.

Additional transport upgrades are also continuing through the summer and autumn, including the installation of segregated cycle lanes and improvements linked to the Bath River Line project.

The council acknowledged that the construction work could result in delays but said efforts have been made to minimise disruption by coordinating schedules with contractors and utility providers. Officials also confirmed that the schemes are expected to finish before the start of the Bath Christmas Market in November.

Councillor Lucy Hodge, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Transport Delivery, said: “Work on Manvers Street is essential and necessary to ensure the long-term safety and resilience of the road, and to prevent issues occurring with vaults underground, like we’ve already seen in St James’s Parade.

“We appreciate there’s never an ideal time for maintenance works and we are working to minimise disruption. These improvements bringing smoother journeys, safer streets, better walking, wheeling and cycling routes and cleaner air will provide long term benefits for all our communities.”
