National Highways travel warning ahead of F1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone

National Highways has advised motorists to plan their journeys and allow extra time this week as Silverstone prepares for up to 570,000 motorsport fans over the Formula 1 British Grand Prix weekend.

Large crowds are expected at the Northamptonshire circuit from Thursday 2 July to Sunday 5 July, with record attendance anticipated across the four-day event.

As in previous years, there will be a one-way system on the A43 on Saturday and Sunday between the new Towcester Relief Road roundabout and the B4525 Interchange near Syresham, with this as a contingency plan for Friday.

Traffic will be directed towards the circuit from 5am to 3pm, and then will switch to take people away from the venue from 3pm to 11pm.

Dadford Road from Silverstone village to the circuit will also become one way on Friday morning and all day Saturday and Sunday – travelling towards the circuit in the morning and switching to away from the circuit in the afternoon.

Visitors are advised to follow directions on event signage only and not their sat navs

Organisers said residents should expect roads in the area to be busy from Wednesday 1 July as overnight visitors arrive until Monday 6 July when everyone leaves the site.

Anyone attending the event is advised to refer to their car parking pass and follow event signage from the M1 and M40 for the correct route rather than relying on online maps or their sat navs.

Extra National Highways traffic officers will also be on patrol in the area over the four days to keep traffic flowing and ensure any incidents are cleared as quickly as possible.

Luke Thrussell, Senior Network Planner at National Highways, said:

“The British Grand Prix is always well attended and residents nearby should expect some delays throughout the four-day event, especially during peak travel times on the weekend as people arrive for the start in the mornings and depart at the end of the day.

“Anybody heading to Silverstone should make sure they leave plenty of time for their trip and we would advise anyone else to avoid the area if possible.”

National Highways’ seasonal T.R.I.P. campaign, encourages drivers to check their vehicles before setting off on a long journey, following this acronym:

• Top-up: Make sure you have enough fuel or electric charge, oil and screen wash before setting off.
• Rest: Take a minimum 15 minute break every two hours behind the wheel to avoid fatigue and get a good night’s rest before travelling.
• Inspect: Check your lights, tyre pressure and tread, and for any obvious vehicle issues.
• Prepare: Plan your route, check the weather and pack essentials including a phone charger, snacks and water in case of delays.
