North Hykeham Relief Road project to deliver long-term community benefits alongside transport improvements

The North Hykeham Relief Road scheme is expected to provide benefits that extend beyond improved transport links, with a strong emphasis on generating lasting social value for nearby communities and the wider Lincolnshire area.

And this procurement route was specifically chosen because it places social value at the heart of scheme delivery, ensuring a lasting legacy for our communities.

“By setting clear goals and working with partners who have a proven track record in this area, we can ensure residents benefit as much as possible from our investment in infrastructure.”

Principal contractor Balfour Beatty is delivering the project and is promoting community-focused outcomes through its sustainability programme, “Building New Futures”, which aims to create positive long-term impact in the areas where it operates.

Michelle Mann said: “As we deliver the North Hykeham Relief Road, we’re keen to work closely with local communities to understand where we can make the biggest positive difference.

“Whether that’s supporting a community project, arranging a school visit or engaging with local organisations, we’d encourage people and organisations to get in touch and help us shape a lasting legacy for the area.”

Community-focused initiatives linked to the scheme

As part of the project, several social value activities are planned to engage local residents and support education and skills development, including:

• School visits and interactive workshops, such as engineering and bridge-building activities, aimed at introducing pupils to construction careers
• Careers outreach sessions with schools, colleges and training providers to highlight opportunities in engineering, infrastructure and sustainability
• Work experience placements and apprenticeships to provide hands-on learning and mentoring for young people entering the industry
• Support for local initiatives through volunteering, donations and collaboration with community groups
• STEM-focused engagement to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics
