Nu-phalt™ | Delivering Durophalt for the preservation of UK roads

Nu-phalt, is a leading company in thermal road and spray injection pothole repair. With nationwide offices, their fleet of repair vehicles cover the whole of the UK, as well as many countries internationally.
Nuphalt was approached by sustainably focused surface treatment manufacturer CNRG Technologies during the lockdown period to act as the sole agent for the UK distribution of Durophalt, one of the company’s flagship products.
About CNRG technologies
CNRG Technologies deliver green solutions for infrastructure and have continued success of selling the Durophalt technology across the globe – and are now able to operate within the UK.
CNRG are the inventors and developers of proprietary technologies specifically associated with the pro-active Gilsonite fortified preservation of asphalt infrastructure.
The company is led by two former ASI Directors, so the company has deep roots and an extensive background in the road surfacing and surface treatment sector.
Durophalt is delivered by bespoke air spray equipment that can deliver the preservation material and grit application to pre-determined quantities.
Crucially, the product is manufactured under license to 90001 140001 & 450001 Quality Certified. With over 1.25 billion m2 laid worldwide, it’s safe to say that Nu-phalt will now be championing proven technology.

Durophalt is used at Mercedes HQ in Germany
About Durophalt
Durophalt is a Gilsonite fortifed asphalt preservative (GFP). GFP’s are the best performing asphalt preservatives available on the market. Durophalt is suitable for any asphalt, in any climate -making it the optimum universal preservative solution.
The product is rapidly administered, with outputs of up to 60,000m2 per shift – so quality doesn’t cost time, including after laying, with the product being a quick drying application.
Durophalt delivery benefits:
- 75% reduction in asphalt maintenance costs.
- 90% reduction in user disruption costs.
- 94% reduction in comparative Co2 emissions.
Asphalt surfaces need replacing every 12-years on average, even though around 94% of its constituents are minerals with a life expectancy measured in thousands of years.
The problem is that the 6% of bitumen binder (glue), holding the 94% of aggregates together degrades due to oxidization, weathering and road salt ingress.
With asphalt surfaces degrading from the top down, due to the 6% binder deterioration, it is the failure to preserve less than 1% of the asphalt material that causes early deterioration.
A very different approach
Preservation technology turns conventional road maintenance on its head by preventing the deterioration of the 6% bitumen binder that, if left untreated, is the sole cause of premature failure of the asphalt surface.
Once spray treated with preservation material the bitumen binder is chemically re-engineered to adhere the surface aggregates and become extremely resistant to the damaging effects of oxidization, weathering, water and salt ingress.
Durophalt – How it works
Once spray applied to the asphalt surface, Durophalt material ingresses into pavement and chemically re-engineers the upper bituminous binder. This re-engineering forms a binding and protective membrane at the base of the surface aggregate.
- Untreated Asphalt
- Durophalt Preserved Asphalt
As a minimum, the application of Durophalt preservative can double the life of the treated asphalt.
As a progressive preservation strategy, with repeat applications, the expected maintenance cost savings would rise to over 75%.
In addition to these substantial cost savings, when compared to conventional asphalt maintenance practices, a proactive Durophalt preservation programme will deliver a 90% reduction in road user disruption and a 92% reduction in like-for-like carbon emissions.
The Nu-phalt approach
Phill Lewis ,Business Development Director of Nu-phalt spoke to us about why Durophalt is the perfect product to be adding to the Nu-phalt arsenal, of solutions:
“Durophalt fits with our portfolio of innovation, and due to the cost effectiveness of the product and it’s manufacture and our cost saving culture we hope to offer a saving of 20 % against our competitors and add significant value to our clients who need further tools to preserve and improve safety on their asset.
“We see that the Durophalt process fits nicely with our thermal process, as we can carry out heat and re-roll on minor defects before Durophalt treatment.
“The product is extremely impressive and efficient, providing longer life cycles for roads, as well as significant savings for our clients.”
