We spoke to Matt about his role at R&C and delved deeper into Matt himself.
Hi.com – HI: Describe your job in three words.
Matt – MC: Varied – Challenging – Exciting
HI: What do you do at R&C Williams?
MC: I am a contracts manager – looking after works from £5K to £5M in value.
HI: What’s the coolest thing you’re working on right now?
MC: Bridge inspections in Ironbridge. We have had to use rope access and divers – not our usual everyday work. I’m now working on a new enquiry to carry out inspections of the post tensioned cables in the structure.
HI: What are the values that drive you?
MC: Honesty and hard work. I care about what I do and want it to be right (this can sometimes be a bad thing too as I find it hard to switch off).
HI: Best thing about being part of the R&C Team?
MC: Plenty of experience within the group. There’s always someone on hand to help you if you need it.
HI: Worst thing about being part of the R&C Team?
MC: As we are currently in temporary open plan offices whilst we undertake the re-build, I am very easily distracted and drift from one conversation to the next.
HI: What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
MC: Playing golf. Watching the Wolves. DIY – currently doing a complete refurbishment of our house. I have 4 daughters so family life is always manic.
HI: Who inspires you? and why?
MC: F1 drivers – the concentration and focus they need when reaching 200mph is incredible.
HI: Who would you most like to swap places with for the day?
MC: Lando Norris – I would love to drive for an F1 team and McLaren are my favourite team.
HI: What did you want to grow up to be when you were a kid?
MC: A footballer.
HI: Last book you read?
MC: Pig the Pug (joys of having children).
HI: Website you visit the most?
MC: BBC – news and sport.
HI: Tell us something we don’t know?
MC: I used to live in New Zealand – moved there when I was 28 to work for a tunnelling contractor.
HI: What is something [people in your industry/niche] have to deal with that you want to fix?
MC: Like most people, the amount of paperwork & permits that are now in place makes it incredibly hard work to get work done. I understand and appreciate why these processes exist, but some common sense and flexibility at times would go a long way.
