Ringway | Sponsoring Chichester City Centre Cycling
West Sussex based highways term services company, Ringway, sponsored the Chichester Festival of Cycling city centre criterium events over the August bank holiday weekend. Comprising of three races – Women’s, Men’s Classic and Men’s Elite – around 100 of the best cycle racers from across the south came to Chichester on Saturday evening to take part. This was the first time races had been held in the city centre.
A 1km circuit, starting and finishing by the Assembly Rooms in North Street, was formed with barriers on either side of the road, which were provided by Ringway. The competitors then raced up to The Cross, turning left along East Street and Eastgate before turning left again along the full length of East Walls. The circuit then turned left again along Priory Road past the Park Tavern, into St Peter’s, with a final sharp left turn back into North Street. Each race lasted for around 40 minutes providing some exciting racing for all of the spectators. Due to a number of roads being closed for this event, Ringway also provided traffic management and a team of operatives to ensure the safety of all participants.
Record breaking bank holiday weather brought out the crowds who gave all of the riders loud and good humoured support throughout the evening.
Tony Toynton, event organiser for Southdown Velo Cycling Club, said: “We have been thinking that Chichester City Centre could provide a great venue for this sort of cycle racing for many years and last Saturday’s races proved that point – I think everyone, from residents to businesses and racers to spectators, had a great evening. The sponsorship and support that Ringway provided for our Festival of Cycling enabled us to achieve real success both for those who raced and for everyone else, including businesses within Chichester”.
