Roadworks mean we can’t live a normal life
Roadworks are a nightmare. Everyone thinks it, everyone knows it and people aren’t afraid to talk about it either.
One of the main complaints in Cambridgeshire are the A14 works. We know the improvement project will eventually make lives much better but it’s hard to remember that when you’re forced to take a diversion on your way home.
But it’s not just the A14 roadworks that are starting to get on people’s nerves.
Drivers in the Swavesey, Histon and Cottenham area have not only had to battle the A14 but they also had to deal with Cambridge Water road repairs.
One local resident who experienced the chaos on the roads said:
“We need action and joint thinking. It seems simple to say, don’t put council roadworks when there is also all the A14 works going on.
“It leaves us virtually on lock down.”
Talking about how bad the traffic has been, she said:
“What on earth was happening on the B1049 yesterday? There was traffic queuing right the way through Cottenham and Histon to the A14. I looked and I couldn’t find anything about it.
“People couldn’t get to work, children couldn’t get to school. People were stuck.”
“This was around 8am in the morning. Even in the afternoon when I passed through it was still busy.
“I have had enough and everyone is saying the same. People are getting to the end of their tether.
“We can’t live a normal life. Kids can’t get to school, parents cant get to work and we are nowhere near to the end.”
All around Cambridgeshire there are road repairs and work being carried out by different departments.
On a normal journey, driving from Swavesey to Histon would take roughly around 20 minutes. But this resident claims that recently she has been allowing two hours for her drive.
That means that her journey now takes six times longer than it should.
She said: “From my home to Histon I now leave around two hours to get there. All the works make the roads come to a standstill. No one can get anywhere.
“I am just fed up of the A14 now. You hold your breath if you know you have to go on it.
“You aren’t sure if you will even get on it or if you’ll get stuck again.
“The constant closures overnight are a nightmare too. For anyone working past 9pm they have to find alternative routes which are normally longer and it is not fair.”
And it is not just journey times people are concerned about.
In regards to the environment this local resident also questioned how longer routes are helping with emission reductions.
She said: “I’m having to find diversions and different ways of getting where I need to go.
“It’s a joke really.
“They are trying to cut down emissions but sending people on longer diversions so that’s not ever going to happen is it? And we are spending more of our own money to get to these places.
“Like I said before I have had enough.”
According to Roadworks.org there are a number of works being carried out in the Cottenham area on the B1049. These works include Anglian Water and Independent Fibre Networks.
Cadent Gas Network is also completing works in the area.
A description of their work says: “Cadent are carrying out essential gas maintenance in the road to replace old iron gas mains with more durable plastic pipes.
“This is to ensure we continue to provide safe and reliable gas supplies to local businesses and residents.”
The Anglian Water works are described as: “RPS Environmental accessing public sewer manholes to complete a Flow Survey and carry out weekly maintenance checks.”
