Summer Road Improvement Programme Gets Underway Across Northumberland

Work has begun on the Northumberland County Council’s annual summer surface dressing programme, aimed at improving road conditions and providing smoother journeys for motorists across the county.

This year, 19 locations are scheduled for treatment as part of the initiative, covering approximately 443,290 square metres of highway network — an area comparable to 62 football pitches.

Surface dressing is typically carried out on roads where the existing surface has deteriorated over time. As wear develops, small cracks can appear, allowing water to penetrate the road structure. This can eventually lead to further damage, including potholes and reduced skid resistance.

The treatment helps to seal these cracks, protect the layers beneath the road surface and enhance the overall condition of the carriageway. By doing so, it can significantly extend the lifespan of the road and reduce the need for more extensive repairs in the future.

In preparation for the programme, maintenance crews have spent recent weeks cleaning roads, carrying out patch repairs and completing other preparatory work before the surface dressing process begins.

The scheme forms part of the council’s new three-year £100m Local Transport Plan and will deliver road improvements at sites stretching from the Scottish border to the county’s south-east corner, including locations within Tynedale.

Councillor Mark Mather, Cabinet Member for Roads and Highways, explained: “Our annual programme of surface dressing will see improvements to roads across the county.

“These are a combination of main roads and more minor ones which are often essential routes between our communities and it’s crucial they are kept in a good state of repair for everyone who uses them.

“During the works there may be minor delays for road users but we will work to keep these to a minimum and we thank people for their understanding.

“We’d ask drivers to take extra care and follow the speed limit signs on the recently surface dressed roads until essential road sweeping has taken place to remove loose road chippings.”
