THS Training – Mandatory Gate Person/Airlock Operator Training Coming into Force

THS Training is advising all clients, contractors, and operatives working under National Highway Sector Scheme (NHSS) 12D of a key industry update that will take effect from 1st October 2025.

From this date, the Gate Person / Airlock Operator course will become mandatory for all individuals who are required to operate gates on 12D worksites. This new mandate aligns NHSS 12D with the current expectations set out in NHSS 12AB and marks a significant shift in compliance requirements.

A Dedicated Role with a Standalone Qualification

The Gate Person/Airlock Operator position is now recognised as a distinct role, entirely separate from the 12AB General Operative and the 12D M1/M2 Operative roles. This means that holding other qualifications will not cover or permit individuals to carry out gate duties without this specific certification.

Industry Must Prepare

Employers, site managers and training coordinators will need to ensure that all individuals expected to operate gates have completed the appropriate course before the October 2025 deadline. Failure to comply may result in operatives being unable to fulfil their duties on site, potentially impacting project timelines and safety standards.
