TMCA – Supporting the Evolution of 12D Training for a Modern Industry

The Traffic Management Contractors Association (TMCA) is proud to play a key role in supporting the ongoing re-write and development of 12D Training Guidance – an important initiative aimed at modernising the training framework for temporary traffic management on Rural and Urban roads.

Funded by the TMCA, this significant piece of work is being carried out to ensure the guidance better reflects the way the industry now operates, incorporating the latest standards, technologies, and safety practices. The revision comes at a crucial time, as the traffic management sector continues to evolve, with changing working methods, new equipment, and a greater emphasis on competence, safety, and accountability across every level of operation.

Why the Re-Write is Needed…

The original 12D training framework was designed to provide operatives and supervisors with the knowledge and competence required to manage temporary traffic management on Rural and Urban roads. However, as highlighted at the TMCA Annual Conference, the industry has moved forward at pace in recent years. From advances in traffic control technology to refined best practice around safety and planning, the current guidance no longer fully represents how modern operations are delivered.

By revisiting the content and structure of 12D training, the re-write will ensure that:

• The training aligns with current legislation, guidance, and working methods
• The content reflects real-world scenarios faced by operatives and supervisors today
• Competence and safety remain at the heart of every stage of training
• The training pathway supports professional growth, ensuring consistent, high-quality standards across the industry
