VIDEO | Road markings which are confusing first time drivers in Newcastle
Road markings in a busy part of Newcastle are said to be confusing drivers – and in some cases causing severe road rage.
The A193 New Bridge Street serves as a major access route for people heading from the city centre to Byker.
But some motorists have been left scratching their heads over its mixed messages.
The A193 is a single carriageway which is flanked by a bus lane, and is often used by those going shopping on Shields Road
As drivers head towards the junction, near the Tanners Arms pub, an arrow painted on the road says they can go straight ahead.
But only a few yards ahead another arrow tells motorists they can only turn right.
Now any regulars would know to change lane when the bus lane ends to proceed straight ahead.
However, that isn’t always obvious to some first time users.
According to one driver, some road users have been spotted hesitating when to change lanes to try and avoid the bus lane.
It inevitably sees them going at a snail’s pace before finally carrying out the manoeuvre.
After being forced to slow down, some drivers can’t avoid getting severe road rage and shout at the motorist.
These road markings are the latest in our series of confusing, irritating and irrational road layouts.
