VIDEO | Why Are There Traffic Jams For No Reason?
We drivers are quick to blame the outside world when it comes to traffic jams: Not enough roads not enough lanes or other bad drivers What we dont realise is that we are not stuck in traffic we ARE traffic.
And as traffic we are behaving badly we create situations that make our life harder than it needs to be. By driving too close to vehicles in front and braking suddenly we create tailbacks behind us that stretch for miles and then complain when the same happens to us.
Furthermore we drive over the speed limit especially the speed set by new ITS signs designed to ease traffic flow. This creates clumps in traffic which contradicts the easy flow of the river of traffic we so desperately want.
While it is true that in these days of overpopulation we need more infrastructure to facilitate our needs. It is also important to (quoting the late Michael Jackson) take a look at yourself and make a change!
The below video has presenter Andrew Marr explaining the phenomenon of The Phantom Traffic Jam.
As an industry we are responsible for creating and maintaining our road network or the blood vessels of the country. However it is also important to instil new behaviours into motorists to make these vessels flow freely.
