WDM® | The SCRIM in America

Researchers at Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) in America have started evaluating the safety of highway surfaces in several US states using British technology.
The project, being funded by the Federal Highways Administration, will analyse continuous stretches of pavement to determine whether improving highway materials or design could reduce crashes and save lives.
They’re using the Sideway-force Coefficient Routine Investigation Machine (SCRIM), from W.D.M. Limited in Bristol. The data collection phase started in Washington and will include testing in Florida, Indiana and Texas.
More than 32,000 people die annually on America’s roads, more than half in off-road or skid related accidents.

WDM® is the UK’s leading manufacturer and provider of highway survey and monitoring equipment, with a unique understanding of highway maintenance and asset management. WDM® is also the UK’s largest survey contractor, serving all UK Government agencies and 90% of local authorities.
At Intertraffic 2016 in Amsterdam, WDM® will be exhibiting its Road Assessment Vehicle for the first time. The RAV carries out high speed data acquisition and recording of surface conditions, including measurement of radius of curvature, gradient and crossfall; the automatic recognition of surface cracking; plus geometric longitudinal profile, accurate at speeds down to 0kph.
