Which Cities Rely on Cars the Most?

New research from the Campaign for Better Transport has produced a 2014 car dependency scorecard which names the cities which rely on cars the most and least.
The city found to rely on cars the most was not actually a city but instead one of the newest towns in the country.
This town is Milton Keynes which came last in many metrics such as the quality of public transport cycling and walking. This is due to its low density planning and a road system which is geared towards cars rather than public transport.
Other towns which ranked bottom were Peterborough and Colchester which had also been shunned for lack of planning policies which support sustainable transport. Colchester was ranked particularly low for its accessibility and planning.
Chief executive of the Campaign for Better Transport Stephen Joseph said: There is a lot that Government can do to make our cities less car dependent he said. What emerges strongly from the research is that local control often goes hand in hand with smarter policies and better targeted investments. More devolution to English cities could mean more integrated and greener transport networks that make our towns and cities better places.
On the flipside Stephen Joseph applauded the highest ranking cities which had good public transport and looked to the future for new developments thoughfully.
If you do not own a car research shows London Manchester and Liverpool are the easiest places to live. Newcastle Cambridge and Brighton sit near the top of the scorecard for investment in car-free transport options regardless of their low building density.
