Chellan’s monitoring team is qualified under the Lantra TTM CCTV Operator (Major Schemes) course – a programme developed by Chellan to bring a consistent and recognised level of quality to CCTV operations across the highways sector.

The course provides a structured foundation for operators, ensuring they have both the awareness and technical understanding required to monitor live schemes effectively. 

This includes awareness of standard highway infrastructure, key terminology, the roles of different highways personnel, and the operation of camera room equipment. Operators are also trained to understand Stop Vehicle Detection (SVD) systems and identify works incursions.

The course develops deeper knowledge and understanding in critical operational areas such as free recovery operations, camera operation techniques, communication between agencies, and data capture in line with GDPR requirements. It also covers the regulatory framework surrounding TTM camera operations, ensuring that monitoring is carried out in a compliant and controlled manner.

Practical Competency

Operatives are trained to navigate highway locations using marker posts, understand and apply DSE regulations and self-assessment, and follow statutory procedures within a TTM camera room environment.

This level of training means that Chellan’s monitoring staff are not simply watching traffic movements on a screen. They are equipped with the knowledge to interpret what they are seeing in the context of a live traffic management layout – and to act accordingly.

From the monitoring room, the team can identify early signs of vehicle incursions into traffic management areas, recognise unsafe queue build-ups before they become critical, and detect damaged or missing equipment on site. With a clear understanding of escalation procedures and site operations, they can respond quickly and appropriately to developing risks.
