Government Appoints Consultants to Drive Greener Road Strategy

National Highways has appointed a joint venture between AtkinsRéalis and Jacobs to act as its new environmental and sustainability technical partner.

The partnership will support the development and implementation of a refreshed sustainability strategy aimed at reducing the environmental impact of England’s motorways and major A-roads.

The move is part of National Highways’ long-term plan to achieve net zero carbon emissions across its 4,500-mile strategic road network by 2050. Over the next three years, the consultancy team will provide expert input across several key focus areas, including low-carbon road design, nature-based solutions, pollution control, efficient resource use, and better landscape integration.

The contract was awarded under National Highways’ specialist professional and technical services framework and is seen as a crucial step toward transforming the highway sector in line with the UK’s environmental ambitions.

Stephen Elderkin, director of environmental sustainability at National Highways, emphasised the importance of collaboration to meet climate and ecological goals. He said that the combined knowledge and values of AtkinsRéalis and Jacobs align with National Highways’ aim to support both a connected nation and a thriving environment.

Peter Baynham of AtkinsRéalis and Richard Sanderson of Jacobs both highlighted the critical role of sustainable infrastructure in supporting economic resilience, protecting the environment, and improving community wellbeing. Both firms bring extensive experience in environmental engineering and collaborative project delivery across the national network.
