Thomson Protective Coatings – From Family Yard to Business Leadership: The Journey of Stuart Thomson

For Stuart Thomson, Managing Director of Thomson Protective Coatings, the world of industrial painting and protective coatings has been a lifelong journey shaped by family ties, hands-on learning, and a steadfast commitment to quality.

Stuart’s first introduction to the industry came as a young boy, visiting his father, Alex Thomson, at Hunting Painting Contractors – later acquired by Cape Industrial Services. Weekend trips to the yard left a lasting impression: watching his father plan jobs, organise equipment, and manage teams. One early memory that sticks with Stuart is an encounter with a small abrasive blast unit tipping over onto him – an unexpected but formative experience.

By his teenage years, Stuart’s involvement became more active. During school holidays, he found himself shovelling grit on the Blyth Bridge in Tewkesbury, closely observing the grit blasting and painting process. It was during this time that a supervisor famously warned him: “Whatever you do, Stuart – don’t get into this game!” Despite the warning, the pull of the industry proved too strong.

After finishing school with limited formal qualifications, Stuart naturally turned to his father for a job. However, Alex insisted that Stuart first learn the trade properly.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Stuart attended college to train as a Painter and Decorator. This grounding gave him a comprehensive understanding of both domestic and industrial painting, instilling a deep respect for the craft.

Once qualified, Stuart entered the industrial coatings world full time, beginning with prep work, cleaning steel, and applying protective coatings. Over two decades, he built experience across a wide range of projects: factory roofs, bridges, street furniture, power stations, and oil refineries, working mainly with Cape Industrial Services.

In 2001, Cape Industrial Services closed its painting division in the West Midlands. Faced with redundancy, Stuart and his father decided to set up their own business. In 2002, they founded Alex & Stuart Thomson Industrial Coating Services (ICS). The company quickly earned a strong reputation for high-quality work across multiple sectors, combining traditional skills with modern protective coating techniques.

As ICS expanded, it underwent restructuring in 2018, bringing in senior managers to support its continued growth. Unfortunately, in 2022, ICS was closed by its owners due to concerns about insolvency.

At that point, with his father retired, Stuart briefly joined a large multi-disciplined PLC, helping lead a new painting division. However, the corporate environment didn’t align with his hands-on approach and values.

Deciding to return to what he knew best, Stuart founded Thomson Protective Coatings Ltd (TPC), bringing with him the same honest, reliable service ethos that had defined his previous ventures.

TPC is proud to offer trusted expertise backed by decades of real-world experience, built on a foundation of family legacy, craftsmanship, and resilience. Now entering its fourth financial year, Thomson Protective Coatings stands as a testament to Stuart’s journey – from his first days shovelling grit on a bridge to leading a respected coatings business.
