TMCA – TMCA Announces Continued Strong Uptake of Temporary Traffic Sign Amendment Course as Public Sector Engagement Grows

The Traffic Management Contractors Association (TMCA) is the UK’s trade association representing the views of its members and driving higher safety standards across the temporary traffic management sector. TMCA works nationally to support innovation, develop best practice, and improve safety at major roadworks sites.

The association also plays a key role in shaping core industry guidance, contributing to Guidance for Safer Traffic Management, Traffic Management – a Good Working Practice, Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual, and Sector Scheme 12 of the Specification for Highway Works.

Strong Sector Demand Since Launch

Launched in partnership with CIHT Learn in September 2025, TMCA’s Temporary Traffic Sign Amendment Course has now been completed by 115 learners across the TTM sector-including several major providers-and is seeing growing interest from public sector organisations responsible for ensuring safe, compliant highway works.

This flexible, on-demand training supports Traffic Management Operatives, Public Sector Professionals and TMCA member organisations in enhancing safety and compliance when amending temporary traffic signs. Key topics include:

• Safety precautions for sign amendments
• Bilingual signage requirements
• TSRGD Schedule 13 Part 9
• Traffic Signs Manual Chapters 7 & 8
• Best practice and current legislation

Meeting a Recognised Skills Gap

Before this programme, training around temporary sign amendments varied significantly across the industry, with many organisations relying on informal or inconsistent approaches. TMCA identified the need for a cost-effective, accessible, sector-wide standard and worked with CIHT Learn to create a consistent digital course that both private contractors and public authorities can adopt.

Local authorities and public sector client teams are increasingly adopting the course to improve the quality and compliance of temporary traffic signing carried out on their networks. Well-trained operatives help reduce incidents, support clearer communication, and ensure works remain compliant with required standards.

The course takes approximately two hours to complete and is designed around the needs of those working on site-both operatives making amendments and supervisors checking the work. The digital format provides flexibility on Android phones, tablets, and laptops, and includes a full year of access for refresher learning. Learners receive a certificate upon achieving an 80% pass mark.
